CMS Ratings and Performance

Although it’s a special needs facility, Alden Village North is not certified by Medicare. Therefore, it does not have a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rating. Services Provided

The special needs home provides various services, including:

  • Residential Services
  • Schooling
  • Respite Care
  • Day Training
  • Therapy

Violations and Citations

Given that the home isn’t certified by Medicare, there are no publicly available inspection reports that could uncover specific violations and citations.

However, in a legal case against the home, state regulators took action to close it. Still, the home remains open to this day.

Due to the vulnerability of the population in this home, it isn’t always easy to discern whether abuse or neglect has taken place. This list of changes in behavior or appearance can help you recognize harm:

  • Unexplained weight loss or malnourishment
  • Poor hygiene
  • Frequent hospitalizations
  • Unexplained bruises, scars, or lacerations
  • Unusual behavior, aggression, or withdrawal from social activities
  • Insomnia
  • Poor hygiene of the resident’s environment
  • Loss of personal items
  • Attempts at elopement

Impact on Residents

People who work with developmentally disabled individuals must treat them with care and compassion and provide them with adequate supervision to protect them from injury or abuse. If they fail, the consequences can be severe, resulting in injury or death.

Health and Safety Concerns

If a resident suffers abuse or neglect, their health and safety can be directly endangered. This includes pain, discomfort, injuries, and chronic illnesses becoming worse.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

The emotional and psychological impact includes feelings of vulnerability, fear, anxiety, and a tendency for social isolation. It can also include poor schooling outcomes and an overall lack of progress.

Case Examples

According to a Chicago Tribune investigation, 13 residents have died there since 2000. Although state regulators tried to close the home, it unfortunately remained open.

A report from the Human Rights Authority analyzed a complaint that a staff member slapped a recipient while taking a shower, after which the employee was terminated. The report found that the facility failed to follow proper procedures after the incident, as it began sending the recipient for unnecessary, repetitive psychiatric evaluations.

Given the facility’s history and the understaffing complaints against Alden, parents and guardians have every right to be concerned about the safety of their loved ones.
